2023
We saw the distribution of warm clothes and school supplies to hundreds of kids in the Mahakulung Province. At no expense to this Foundation Marlene and Ken traveled to the lower Everest region (Solukhumbu) to assist in the distribution of shoes, socks and school supplies as well as to survey the situation to identify children in need. We came home seeing the desperate need for more warm clothes so kids could attend school.
The Back to School Project was completed in November and another project in January 2023 also occurred!
Fund Raising
We held a fund raiser on the evening of Sunday March 5, 2023 to reestablish NEEF funds for another project in the spring. This was an initiative of our board member Troy Yanel. You can see the need for this latest project and how essential it was. I hope you were able to take part in the webcast.
Marlene walking for days on two broken legs!
Three days trekking to Namche Bazaar before we could buy bandages for Marlene's legs
Marlene and I created a fundraiser where we trekked up to Everest Basecamp. This truly was a major undertaking as we drove from Kathmandu to Manthali in the Ramechhap District to fly to Lukla where the uphill trek of 7,000 feet began. Marlene experienced an unfortunate slip and fall in the very early morning in Manthali as we rushed to catch the dangerous flight to Lukla. We did not realize that she had broken all four bones in both legs! One was displaced 3 mm! But, being the woman she is, she pressed on through the pain slowly hiking the entire way to Everest Base camp over the next 8 days. Sadly though, when we began our descent back to Lukla then on to Chheskam she was not able to take the downhill pain of walking any longer. We had no choice but to hire a helicopter, at our expense, to transport us, Dilip Kulung and Kalam Kulung to our NEEF sponsored schools in the Kulung village of Chheskam, Solukhumbu. Our American and Canadian experience can't prepare anyone for the remote nature and lack of facilities available in this area. Dilip and his Everest Mara Foundation are invaluable to the daily life of his people.
Our visit to Chheskam was essential to fulfilling our promise to you our sponsors. We needed to ensure that all of the plans and projects that have been developed and paid for by our NEEF supporters have occurred in exactly the spirit and capacity that they are described. It is important to us that we trust and verify how our supporters donations are used. We have deep faith in Dilip Kulung and his Everest Mara Foundation. They are the heart and soul of the Kulung and Sherpa people of the Solukhumbu.. We are fortunate and proud to have such a genuine profound relationship with this man. He facilitates all aid distribution to the many mountain villages that NEEF supports in the area.
Large items like fuel can be carried by horses and yaks but heavy, delicate items like slate pool tables and beer are carried by people.

DONATE
We hope that you can find it in your heart to continue to help! Every dollar that is raised goes directly to assist children in one of the most remote locations in the world. No one else is coming but you!
