COATS FOR KIDS

2020 NEEF

Supporting children through education in rural Nepal

The following is a brief history of the coats for kids project that NEEF undertook in fall, 2020.  We are very proud of its wonderful success.

Update:

Very excited to deliver the final report on our latest project to provide warm coats to school kids in Mahakulung, Nepal.  Without these coats kids would be unable to attend school during the coldest winter months in the Himalayas.  We ran into a glitch near the end where the school had forgotten to include its 35 preschool children.  So we dug deep and found the funding as well as used the negotiation skills of our Nepal counterpart, Dilip Kulung, to come up with 185 coats, shoes and socks.

The coats were produced right in Kathmandu so this money was spent right on the street where it would do the most good.  No fat cats taking a profit anywhere! I'll attach some pictures which should tell the story.  Also, the coats were delivered to the kids during Dashain, a Nepali festival celebrating the victory of good over evil - it doesn't get better than that!

One wrinkle, poor Dilip burned the clutch out of his motorcycle fighting his way up into the mountains to help with distribution.  You have to travel Nepal mountain roads to know what he was up against.

A huge thank you to all of the donors who participated in this project and made it all possible.  You prove that there really is a lot of good in this world.

Cheers!

Update:

Today I ran a Facebook ad for NEEF.  I've never done that before.  We have done very well in this project so far having raised $2,300 of the necessary $3,200.  We only have $900 to go or the funding for 35 more kids.  Even if the Facebook ad pays off just a little it will be delightful to know that it works!  :)

About us:

NEEF has been quiet for some time although, like so much of our world during  COVID-19, it has been working vigorously in the background. Recently though NEEF has taken up a new challenge to provide a warm jacket, pants and a pair of running shoes as winter wear for the children in two of the mountain schools in the Mahakulung Rural Municipality of the Solukhumbu District.

That likely won’t mean much to you but these are the poorest rural Nepali children living in the steep mountainous region of lower Mt. Everest. They will not attend school for the four coldest winter months without this support.

We aim to raise $3,200 to purchase these items for 150 Sherpa students in the Ratna Pragatishil and Mahakulung Basic Schools. That’s only $26 each. We have often thought about collecting used clothes for them, which would be great, but the transport costs from here to there would be prohibitive.

Thank you for listening.
